Restaurante Casa Elvira en Cangas del Narcea

Comida muy bien preparada, rápida la atención. Todo perfecto.

Looking for somewhere for lunch in Cangas del Narcea after visiting the Monasterio and Roman bridge a few miles away, by pure accident we found Casa Elvira, a tiny bar with a comedor. A Menu del Dia in the window offered 3 courses, bread, a drink & water @ 12 € ; 5 or 6 options for starters on the day we visited included bream (dorada), fabada, salad. Similar 5 or 6 options for mains included filete de ternera (beef) , pork, conejo (rabbit) etc. We decided what we wanted while reading the menu outside, which was as well as the sole waitress/bartender simply asked in Spanish what we wanted. We chose Fabada an Asturian dish which we had not yet sampled, with conejo to follow. Red wine "tinto, por favor" resulted in a whole full bottle of red and two small bottles of water arriving. And real fresh bread. We did not expect a whole tureen of fabada complete with ladle to be plonked on to the table, providing two brimming soup plates of thick bean soup with chunks of chorizo & morcilla and enough for second identical platefuls. The conejo came with chips and whole green peppers. The seeds had to be painstakingly extracted as they were fiery. It was all flavoursome. The cook emerged from the kitchen. Our Spanish did not allow us to understand all the dessert options but recognised tarta de queso and ice cream, choosing the former. A couple of freshly brewed "cafe con leche"s and there was change proffered from 30€. How can they serve such complete delicious filling meals for so little? The quality and quantity and flavour were unsurpassable. The ambience is basic, but the food was so good. Incredibly good. Go in and try it for yourself. Please stay open till we return some day. Had we planned a longer stay in the area, we would have returned for every meal, and back home now, we are still dreaming of that lunch we ate last week.
