I'm a frequent visitor to Madrid, and I have a few favorite restaurants, but always like to try new ones as well. On a Sunday evening in late March, I had reserved a table at Lateral Santa Ana, which was a very easy process.
The outside of the restaurant looks like many others in this historic area, with large wood framed windows facing the plaza. Inside though, it is much different, with a sleek design and art hanging on the walls. The art, rather than just covering the walls, actually creates a gallery. Called Arte LTL, this is a series of temporary exhibitions. The featured artist while we were there was Justo Ruiz Granados, and for us, as artists, it was wonderful to be having our meal while being able to see his paintings.
Of course, it wasn't all about the art, we did order food, but first we began with drinks; a red wine for my parter, I believe it was a Luis Cañas Crianza, and vermut for me. We started with pan and gyozas vegetales acompañadas de salsa de chili dulce (bread and vegetable dumplings with a sweet chili sauce), then I chose carrilleras de cerdo con reducción de vino tinto, puré de patata y piparras (pork cheeks in a red wine reduction with potato and peppers), and she found the raviolis de verduras asadas con salsa gorgonzola (roasted vegetable ravioli with gorgonzola sauce). As wonderful as the atmosphere and design of the restaurant, the food surpassed that, quickly becoming my favorite meal of the trip to this point.
What made the experience even better was the incredible staff. They were friendly and attentive, but also consummately professional. While we were eating, there was a small group in the back of the restaurant, and it was clear that one of the women had overdone it on the drinks. She started off just being a bit loud, but then began knocking things over and nearly falling out of her chair. The manager and servers were quick to respond, and handled the situation very nicely. The party calmed down, and we were able to finish our meal without any further disruptions.
Before we left we indulged in a couple of postres to share; tarta de queso and torrija. The were delicious and made for a perfect end to an amazing meal.

Lugar legal perto da Plaza Mayor. Comemos hambúrgueres. Pequenos mas gostosos. Pedimos também uma tigelinha de bacalhau que foi elogiado. Preço justo para a região.
